“Make a Joyful Noise!” Psalm 100

Pastor Tom’s Weekly Blog.              “Make a Joyful Noise!”                Psalm 100

May 15, 2020

“Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.”

Psalm 100:1

Many years ago, I attended a worship service that invited a choir to sing from a school in the area. It was a rather large choir and it seemed like everyone was singing from a different piece of music; folks were singing off-key with unrecognizable notes and singing them at the top of their lungs. I sat in the pew amazed, not by their music proficiency but by their joy. As they sang, they had a tear in their eye and smiles that went ear to ear. They were swaying to their own beat as they sang the same.  Tears of joy rolled down my cheeks as they sang to the Lord whom they loved with all their mind, soul, heart, and strength. Maybe they would not be asked to sing with every choir, but they have a standing invitation to join with the choir of angels singing praise and thanksgiving to the Lord our God. It is not about great talent and ability to sing praises to God, it is all about faith, and all about commitment to the One who died on a cross for us, and rose on the third day so all who believe may live a life of joy basking in the light of our resurrected Savior now, this moment. A “joyful noise” to the Lord is made anytime the faithful celebrate the presence of God in their lives, and that celebration is contagious. Worship is not defined by time and space, but by our heart-felt praise and thanksgiving to the one who created us and has redeemed us through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. A joyful noise to the Lord is made anytime we see the world with eyes of faith and experience the presence of God where we find ourselves every moment.  “Joyful noise” is made when a kind word is spoken, a loving hand is extended, and a witness offered.  Make a joyful noise to the Lord, and celebrate the goodness and steadfast love of God. The notes sung are less important than the witness extended and the joy celebrated.  Thank you Jesus for the joy in our souls as we make a “joyful noise” to you with every step we take and every note we sing.
