Thoughts Along the Way

Pastor Tom Joyce

November 16, 2021

“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”

Colossians 2:6-7

As we prepare for our thanksgiving celebrations much time is taken to plan for meals, family, and feeding those who are in need of a meal or just the company of a friend, which is all good and blessed to be sure.  For me, the thanksgiving holiday is less about big meals and more about big thanksgiving to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; it is all about living a life of thanksgiving and praise for all blessings received every moment of every day. Think about how God has been with you throughout your years; the good times, bad times, and all times in between. The Psalmist prays to the Lord, “lead me to the rock that is higher than I, for you are my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy,” and because of God’s presence through Jesus, “I will always sing praises to your name.” (Psalm 61) Our thanksgiving to God is a lifestyle of thanksgiving, of singing praises, of seeing the presence of God in all things great and small. To “abound in thanksgiving” is to accept the grace, hope, peace, and joy of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and in all things just proclaim, “thank you Jesus!” These three simple words have a profound impact on how you view the world and all that has been received in this life and in the hope to come.  The complexities of life in today’s world can have a way of hindering our thanksgiving but that is all the more reason to abound in thanksgiving which offers comfort and hope even and especially in the eye of the storm. You are blessed today, so give thanks. You have been blessed with another opportunity to share our Lord’s grace with another whose faith may be shaken. May this thanksgiving for you be a new beginning of living life in praise of the One who has called all to his saving grace. Make Jesus be your life’s story with every chapter giving praise to the One who has called you by name. As Fanny Crosby sings, “this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long,” may your life be a living out of grace always and everywhere abounding in thanksgiving.
