The Jesus Thing Matthew 22:34-40

“On these two commandments hang all the law and prophets”

Matthew 22:40

Many seasons ago there was a song whose refrain was, “sign, sign, everywhere a sign…” It seems like these words could sum up where many of us find ourselves today. We live a world made more complex by an endless stream of rules, regulations and guidelines that have a tendency to drive us crazy. Distractions keep us from truly living life as God had intended; living the life we have been given “in abundance.” There is a way out, and it is pure, simple, and holy; “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind….and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:38-39) It is the Jesus thing, it is what lightens our load and sets us free from all that keeps us from celebrating the life each of us has been given. Funny thing about actually living out these words of Jesus; judgment ends, grace takes over, and joy overwhelms. When our focus is on loving God, we take more seriously God and less seriously ourselves; celebrating others becomes our focus, leaving judgment to God. When God’s grace takes over we begin to “love our neighbor” where they are and not where we think they should to be. Grace is not “anything goes,” rather it is acknowledgement that we are all in the same boat, sharing the same undeserved love that God has shared with us. Maybe Jesus is calling us to just lighten up a lot and celebrate the life we have been given, not wrapped up in the endless cycle of judgment and condemnation, rather be filled with the joy of Jesus; so simple, so joyous, so holy. It’s a “Jesus thing!” Thank you Jesus.
