Teach Us Luke 11:1-13

“Lord, teach us to pray…”

Luke 11:1

It should be so easy talking to God but for some reason we stumble over our words; we think there must be a special way of putting words together that is the right and only way to pray. When Jesus was asked by his disciples how to pray, he taught them to pray what we know as the “Lord’s Prayer.” Yet sometimes even praying with the words of Jesus is hard, especially when we need God the most. Prayer is not about the right words rather it is about faith, faith that God listens and answers our prayers, whether the answer is what we would like to hear or not. Prayer is a gift from God pure and simple that allows us to communicate with God in a manner that reflects who we are and where we are at the time. God knows our lives are not perfect and that one event can change them forever. Sometimes we pray with reverence and other times we are so mad we seem just to be screaming at God, and that is ok; God needs to hear what is truly on your heart. God is big enough, grace-filled enough and merciful enough for you to pray no matter how it may sound; God knows your heart, your hurt, and your soul. So what happens when we just have no words, when clouds hang dark and heavy in our lives? Well, “the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that the very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.” (Romans 8:26) So even if we think we do not have the words, the words are given to us by God’s grace. Prayer is your lifeline and God will never cut the line, no matter how far away you may be drifting. You are God’s beloved child and as with any parent, God loves to hear your voice, tend to your wounds, and offer you hope and assurance that you are never alone. Every time you pray, you are talking to your creator and your redeemer, who has promised to be with you “always to the end of the age.” Prayer is needed; prayer is your soul crying out to the one who has “called you by name.” Prayer is a precious gift that just needs to be opened. Thank you Jesus for the gift of prayer and your amazing grace.
