Peace John 14:25-27

Pastor Tom’s Weekly Blog.                      “Peace”                       John 14:25-27

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give as the world gives, so do let your hearts be troubled and do not let them be afraid.”  John 14:27

When Jesus came to Pilate before he was crucified, Pilate asked Jesus, “what is truth?”  Whether Pilate’s question was sincere or not is still debated to this day.  So what if someone asked you “what is peace,” how would you respond? Perhaps freedom from violence, hatred, killing, or other acts that keep us on edge and unable to fully appreciate life.  Or how about this answer, “world peace.” God offers an answer to this question of peace that is unambiguous and all-encompassing. Peace is the very presence of God through Jesus Christ in our lives in the midst of living. The peace that Jesus offers is not the same as world peace, cannot be defined by human condition or cessation of human inhumanity towards one another. The peace of Christ is not about freedom from pain, loss, or anything else of that nature. The peace that is offered by Christ is the acknowledgement that life happens but that in the midst of “happenings” there is the love, comfort, strength, and wisdom of God. It is the calm of knowing that no matter the path we are on and no matter what actions we have taken to make that path a mess, Jesus will offer the tools necessary to journey through these things with the promise that we will never be alone and that the love of God is stronger than any of our shortcomings or challenges that may come our way. No, Jesus does not “give as the world gives;” but offers something that can never be taken away; peace, that is out of this world. As this current journey continues, with its twists, turns and ebb and flows, know that the peace of Christ is with you to offer calm in the midst of the storm; “so do not let your hearts be troubled and do not let them be afraid.”  Thank you Jesus!
