“Of the same mind” Philippians 2:1-11

“Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others.”

Philippians 2:4
If we picked the mind of Jesus, what would we find? Would we find aspirations of grandeur or perhaps wanting to make sure everybody knew who he was in the world? It is usually not a good idea to psychoanalyze others, especially not the mind of God. Yet, it is tempting; what would be going through the mind of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords? First of all, I would imagine king of kings would not be part of the template. Jesus would not be interested in promoting himself but always pointed beyond himself to God. Jesus “emptied himself” of who he truly was so he could know who we truly are, hence the absolute need for the cross. The cross represents who we are, the sin, the dirt, uncertainty, and even our pain, doubt, and sorrows. Though being crucified was anguish for Jesus, it is freeing for us; because of Jesus we can continue on our sojourn through life with a mind that is set beyond ourselves to break free of all the stuff that has held us back from living life, in abundance.  For us “emptying” ourselves means that we do not have all the answers but we are making room for the Spirit to fill us with the mind of Christ that is grace, mercy, hope, joy, forgiveness, and peace.  The mind of Christ is filled with eternal love, for you especially you. If we opened the sacred mind of Jesus and accepted for ourselves its contents, we would see all people and the creation of which are a part in radically different ways. We would celebrate every life around us, hope the best for them, and use the gifts we have been given by God to help people along the way. We would strive to deepen their relationship with Jesus through our witness of the One who offered each of us new life.  Maybe a good goal for life ought to be to, “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2Peter 3:18) so through our witness others can celebrate life in new and exciting ways.  Stephen Schwartz penned these words for the musical, “Godspell” that we should “see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, follow thee more nearly day by day.”  Good idea.  “Be of the same mind as Christ Jesus” in all your thoughts and conduct, celebrating all God’s people with grace upon grace.
