Daily Devotional – Day 6

Day 6          Take time to Be Holy, part 6

“Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6-7

Read:  Philippians 4

After many years after graduating school, I returned to classrooms, homework, reading, and tests. It was fun learning more about the Bible, history, theology and understanding our Christian faith. Schooling gave me the tools, yet it wasn’t until many years later I discovered the “peace” that my education tried to define. In 2011, our church sent a mission team to respond to the devastating tornadoes that ravaged Joplin, Missouri. We saw much destruction but also much faith. One evening we sat around and just started saying “Thank you, Jesus” with as many syllables as possible. We laughed at ourselves until we cried, but what began as an evening of debriefing and lessening the incredible impact of what we saw on our hearts, we began to take very seriously what it meant to truly say “thank you Jesus” and mean it with down to our very soul; it was life-changing and spirit-lifting. When there is rejoicing and thanksgiving for the presence of God, there also is the peace of Christ; they all go hand in hand.  Worry begins to melt away, anxiety draws down, and commitment to love of neighbor is intensified. The peace of Christ becomes part of who we are when we rejoice in the fact that the Lord is closer than we ever could imagine. Thank you Jesus for our lives. Thank you Jesus for the lives around us. Thank you Jesus for showing us how to live.  Just thank you Jesus! It may feel strange at first thanking Jesus and “rejoicing in the Lord” when our lives are just in a weird time, but when we do thank Jesus, His presence becomes even more pronounced, offering us peace, “which surpasses all understanding.”  Thank you Jesus!

What can you thank Jesus for today?

How can your faith help someone else through your thanksgiving?

How are you taking time to be holy today?

Prayer: Thank you Jesus for everything in my life and those that are on the path with me. Help me to rejoice in you, even on my toughest days.  Thank you Jesus for your blessings received and the privilege to share them.  Amen
