“A Worthy Life” Philippians 1:27-30

“Only live a life worthy of the Gospel of Christ”

Philippians 1:27

“I am not worthy,” the centurion proclaimed when he asked Jesus to heal his servant. (Matthew 8:8) Truer words were never spoken; the centurion was not worthy to ask God for anything.  The man probably did stuff that he was ashamed of; maybe he did not know the Scriptures or never set foot in a worship setting. People come from all different backgrounds, some have criminal convictions, some have never been caught, some have done nothing wrong, just have done nothing for anybody else. There are still others who have addictions that they believe are hidden from view.  Bottom line, we all have a past, we all have a present, and we all fall painfully short of the life God would have us live. But do not despair, because it is not about you, nor about me, it is about Jesus, all about Jesus and as St. Paul writes to the people of Galatia, “it is no longer I who live, but is Christ who lives in me.” (Galatians 2:20) Our faith is about understanding that what makes us “worthy” is not about living a created reality of who we think we are or should be, rather it is accepting the truth that because of Jesus, we begin to live a life that follows Christ who dwells within us. Living a worthy life is a life defined by the grace of Jesus Christ while understanding our “worthiness” comes from God through our Risen Savior. When we live by faith, we see our worth in the One who has called us by name, the One who came not to condemn us but so we can be saved through him.  Perhaps one of the reasons Jesus was so emphatic about judging others is that in our judgment of others we are judging ourselves while judging someone else’s worth based on our perceived worthiness and not the worthiness of Jesus.  Living a worthy life is placing Jesus at the center of our very being, confident not in our own worthiness but in the worthiness of Jesus.  Faith in Jesus Christ lightens the load and sets us free from the baggage of our unworthiness to the reality of living a new life in hope, joy, and peace.  Thank you Jesus.
