“Take the Step.” Matthew 14:22-33

“Jesus said, ‘come,’ So Jesus got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus.” Matthew 14:29
During this season of pandemic, we all to some degree have created “bubbles” for ourselves; a safe place to dwell as we fight the COVID epidemic. Even before the pandemic struck our nation, we had our bubbles, places of comfort and refuge. It was a place of low risk, and low interference from others; it was safe. For Peter, stepping out of his bubble at Jesus’ command was easy; the sea was smooth and nothing challenged his steps. But then it happened, the sea became a bit meaner, the wind began to blow, and he began to sink. And in his frightened state, he called Jesus to save him, and save him Jesus did. Sometimes we like our bubbles; they are safe. But life does not work well always dwelling in a bubble because with no risk there is no growth, life becomes stagnant, and our perceived need for God is lessened. God calls us out of our bubbles to witness our faith beyond the false sense of security it offers. God is calling you to take a step in faith, do more with the gifts that you have received. There will be times that it will be a smooth ride, other times you start having a sinking feeling as did Peter. It is those times you need faith, you need to know that your Lord Jesus is standing in the gap for you, reaching out his mighty arm of grace so you can step beyond into a world that desperately needs your faithful witness. God does not intend for you to live in isolation nor to sit on the gifts you have been given but to step out with the grace you have received to witness the joy that is Christ to a world that needs Christ badly. When you step out in faith, you need to know you are not alone in that step and the steps that come after. The only way to celebrate life in abundance is to experience abundant life in Christ and that requires a step of faith and trust in the One who created you, redeemed, and has called you by name. Faith is not purely academic, it is not a battle cry, a series of do’s and don’ts, nor is it a label to be used as a badge of honor. Faith is knowing that no matter where the next step of life leads you, you will be ok, you will be lifted up “on wings like eagles, shall run and not be weary, shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31) Take the step of faith, no matter where your journey is at this point and you will know the presence of the Lord and that presence will strengthen you and equip you for the road ahead. God says, “So do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you and help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10) Thank you Jesus.
