Daily Devotional – Day 7

Day 7 Take Time to Be Holy, part 7

“Those of steadfast mind you keep in peace—in peace because they trust in you.”

“Isaiah 26: 3

Read: Isaiah 26

Ever think of what we trust in life? Fresh water supply. The car will start. Everybody stays on the correct side of the road when driving. We take these things for granted so when there is a disruption we are taken by surprise.  If we begin to think we are vulnerable, peace becomes a distant memory.  When Isaiah speaks of someone with a “steadfast mind,” he is speaking to those who never waivers in their trust of God, who believes with their heart of hearts that no matter what happens in life, they continue to be held in the palm of God’s hand. In 1735, John Wesley, founder of the Methodist movement in England, set sail for Savanah, Georgia with the intent of drawing many people to Christ. Sailing with him were a group of Moravians who were very devout Christians. Along the way, the ship ran into a terrible storm and Wesley became frightened that the ship may sink while the Moravians all sat together below deck singing hymns and trusting God with their lives, essentially proclaiming; “God will sustain us if die along the way, and God will sustain us if we arrive safely to Savanah.” They were of “steadfast mind” that God will never let them go no matter the circumstances and that fact offered them the peace that escaped Wesley.  Maybe true peace is experienced when we fully trust God with our lives no matter what and no matter where.  As the old hymn sings, “I’m so glad I learned to trust thee, precious Jesus, Savior friend; and I know that thou art with me, wilt be with me to the end. Jesus, Jesus I how I trust him! How I’ve proved him over and over! Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust him more.” (“Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus)  Put your trust in Jesus, and you will know peace, and that peace will set you free.

What are the things you take for granted in this life? Assumptions of truth?

How do you depend on God?

How are you taking time to be holy today?

Prayer:  Gracious God, help me to be of “steadfast mind,” to trust you with my life and my eternal life through Jesus. Empower me to see your presence in my life and come to know what it truly is to live a life of joy and peace this day.  Amen
