Thoughts Along the Way

Pastor Tom Joyce

March 16, 2021

“If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

1 John 1:9

All the pieces were neatly laid out on the floor, and in the middle of the to-be assembled table were the instructions just ready to be ignored. As I began putting the pieces together, I noticed the first part did not seem to be in the right place but I thought, “I will make it work once all the other pieces are in place.” The further along the construction project went, the further away from the original design it became. In fact, the final product was unworkable and certainly unappealing. Sin is like that, we know how we started out was wrong but figure at some point we will make it work and nobody will ever know. The sad reality is that if we just admit we were wrong in the first place, putting our ego aside, our lives would be so much simpler and profoundly blessed.  The amazing thing about the grace of our Lord Jesus the Christ is that if we confess, earnestly admit that we are heading in the wrong direction, we will be forgiven and blessed with the opportunity to live life in the abundance of grace.  Jesus does not keep track of how many times you failed or did things you were not proud of, but Jesus does celebrate those times you turn back to him and seek to start fresh.  As Jesus said, “God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world may be saved through him.” (John 3:17) Sin has a way of destroying lives and taking away the joy of living; Jesus is saying just give it up, unburden your soul and you will know the truth of living life of faith in Jesus Christ, and that eternal truth will set you free, free indeed.
