The Invitation Matthew 11:25-30

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28

At some point in everyone’s life, living can be a challenge. A bad day at work. Illness. Loss. Uncertainty. The list can go on and on. Thankfully there are many days when it feels like the sun will never stop shining, the warmth of family and friends comforts the heart, and our daily tasks are actually fun. There is an invitation out there, though, in the midst of our days, good and not so good, to actually refocus our lives towards a reality that has no end, that seeks compassion over judgment, and hope over hopelessness. The invitation of our Lord Jesus Christ goes out to all people, no matter who they are, but the invitation needs to be accepted with all one’s heart, mind, soul and strength. The promise of God through Jesus the Christ is that we will have rest from taking life on alone and from thinking we need to be in control and have all the answers. Imagine the burden that could be lifted by lifting our eyes to the hills of our loving God. To lean on the “everlasting arms” of Jesus means that in the midst of the weariness that life’s burdens can bring, there is the affirmation of an alternative, a new way of living that soothes the sin-sick soul and offers rest. Accepting Christ into your life does not guarantee a pain-free existence but it does offer hope for a new day and a joy of knowing the Creator of the universe will be with you now even to the end of the age and that you will “find rest for your weary soul.” Thank you Jesus.
